Lewis L. Kull was the quintessential teacher, educator, investigator, scholar, mentor, and colleague. He began training in EEG technology at the age of seventeen, immediately following high school, and he devoted his life to the field of neurodiagnostics for the next forty-four years. His talent and brilliant mind were readily recognized and he rapidly ascended the career ladder, taking on supervisory and management jobs in innovative labs from Montreal to Los Angeles. Both locally and nationally, Lew had a major influence on the politics of elevating EEG technology from a purely technical field to a profession with considerable stature in the medical field. His ability to interface neurophysiology with emerging computer technology is without comparison, and he was a major contributor to the application of neurophysiology to neurocritical care, especially the development of digital trending analysis.

Lew loved to teach. He was never too busy to answer questions or seize a “teaching moment” in written manuscripts, presentations, and thoughtful dialogues. He taught without being judgmental, without pointing out weakness, but rather by selflessly empowering others, encouraging them, and pointing out their strengths.
In April 2008, Lew was serving as the Director of Clinical Neurophysiology Operations at the Columbia campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital until he was struck by a truck while walking across the street on his way to teach a Saturday morning board prep class to local technologists. He suffered a traumatic brain injury from the accident. Lew passed away in April of 2009 from complications of his injury.
In 2010 the ASET Foundation established the Lewis Kull Online Education Scholarship to honor his passion for teaching. The scholarship program is annually funded by ASET – The Neurodiagnostic Society.
The scholarship covers the registration cost for up to two ASET on-line courses per applicant. The scholarship does not cover the purchase cost of reading material that may be required for course enrollment. No individual is eligible to be a scholarship recipient in two consecutive years.

In addition to being a member of ASET in good standing, candidates must have been a member of ASET for at least one year prior to the date of the application. To apply for a Lewis Kull Online Education Scholarship, you will need to complete the application form and include with it a typed, signed statement of your general activities and interests, career and professional goals, responsibilities of your position and how completing the online courses will better help you in the course of your day-to-day job, long-term career, and/or professional goals. Scholarships are awarded based on financial and educational needs of the applicants. Individuals are not eligible for a Lewis Kull Online Education Scholarship if they have received funding from the ASET Foundation within two years prior to making application.
Applications are accepted each quarter of the year. At the end of each quarter (March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31) the ASET Foundation Board of Directors convenes to review the applications received that quarter and select the recipient(s).
